Protest Shoot - 19th March

These are some the shots from the shoot.
On the 19th of March I attended a protest to get some more footage for my groups music video. I wanted to capture a series of shots that involved our main character in a protest. However i was unable to capture this because my actor (charlie) fell ill and my other group member decided to drop out. This meant I was only able to capture filler shots. I feel the quality of this shoot was no up the the quality that I wanted because there was not the right subject (the main character in the protest).

Band Images For Website

Here are some images that I quickly took of our band in the school studio. These images did not take to long to take due to the fact they are only going to be used on our band profile page on our website. We needed Plain images of our band looking at the camera so that fans could see what they looked like behind the mask on the home page. However we kept the image of our lead sing wearing a mask to reinforce our hole idea that our lead sing is the unknown 'Fifth Element'.

Digipac Designs

This is an image that I found on google images of smoke weaving in and out of a mask. As a group we decided that our front cover was going to be of our mark but it needed to be more dramatic then this so we thought smoke was a good way of achieving this.

Here Charlie has mocked up a quick example of what we wanted to achieve when photographing our front cover. He used the image from google images and replaced it with an image of our mask that we took for the merchandise on our website. We will use flash guns guns to capture the smoke and a black background to increase the contrast.

Charlie And I have decided we will use our photographic skills to capture this image for our digipac front cover. We will most likely use a studio to achieve this but will have to be care when using the smoke.

Website Analysis - Foo Fighters

This is the Foo Fighters merchandise website. I wanted to look more specifically at the shopping area of Band websites. Foo Fighters have a similar merchandise website to what we want to achieve.
This website is very simple but displays their products very well because the site is not cluttered and clearly shows what each of the products looks like. They have kept their navigation bar and band name/logo at the top of the web page so that it is easy for users to find their way to other areas of the website.

Here is an screenshot of our merchandise page in which Charlie has put cloths, that I have photoshopped our band logo onto, on the page. We used a simple dark grey background because we felt that dark colours gave off the right atmosphere for our band. We did not use back because black is too overpowering and will kill off the other parts of our website.

Rough Cut

Here I have created a cut of the music video with the help of my group. We have decided to scrap this cut and start again because we felt it needed to be intercut with recently filmed footage to make the music video link together better. However, the concept of having the main character putting on the mask at the beginning then cutting to protest footage is something that we intend on keeping because we felt it was quit striking and put the viewer straight into the action. We also need to find a way of editing the video so that the mask character seemed part of the protest due to the fact we do not have any footage of him inside it.

Here is an example of one of the images that I edited for the background of our website and Digipak. Due to the fact our band do not want to promote big brand names I had to use the clone tool to get rid of them. This was a long and repetitive technique of doing this but I feel it has paid off and makes the image of our band more accurate to our band identity.
I then cropped the image and blacked out the corners to make the picture wide angle giving the band a more dramatic feel. I then burned out the background members of the band so that the masked member comes out much stronger.

Final Logo Designs

I am very happy with these final designs because they are simple but at the same time effective at making our five band members/elements quite dominant and leader like look. charlie changed our design a couple of times and these our three favourites. My favourite of the three design in its simplicity is the middle one due to the fact the colour matches our website (dark) and will work well with clothing. We made this design blue because this was the coloured spray paint that we wanted to use when our protagonist is grafting.

This is another logo that was considered however we felt that the design copied the the symbols seen in the programme avatar (a programme about the different elements being harnessed  by people).

Photo Shoot

This is a shoot that my group and I did in the school photography studio. We wanted to achieve images that represented our band as a quite mysterious arty band.

When using the lighting I half lit the mask so that deep textures and tones came out on the face. This meant the band members were shadowed giving them quite and eerie look.
These images are for our website and digipak.

Preparation for Photo Shoot

After school today we have planned to photograph our band members for our website and Digipak using the school photography studio. Because another member of my group and I also study photography it means we are familiar with the studio and how to capture an aesthetically pleasing image that also represents our band in an appropriate way.

We will aim to get a variety of photos ranging from images of the band to photographs of merchandise. We want to images of the band to be quite dark and gives the band members a quite mysterious feel. Using low key lighting will be a good approach to doing so. The focal point of our group photos will be of the band member in the mask. this reinforces the idea that he is important and the image of our band.

In the studio there is  an infinity board that we will use to take pictures of our merchandise. This includes the mask, jumpers, t-shirts, etc. The Royal Blood website is a good example of how to display merchandise - very simply pacing them on a white background with a small aperture so there is a small depth of field making more of the items in focus.

Logo Designs

Here I have sketched a few ideas to use as our band logo. We wanted the logo to be a symbol rather then a title so that it would have a meaning. I decided that five simple shapes would be would be more eye catching then a deducted scrambled image. This also meant when shooting the graffiti scenes it would be more achievable to recreate for our actor (Charlie). The final design was three triangles, representing the five elements. Then with a circular border around it to give the logo a more finished look. I then gave this design to Charlie to then recreate it on photoshop for a more professional look.

Band Profile Change

Due to the Band Profile not making scenes it was changes and then had to be re-posted onto our website.

 Band Profile

Element 5 are a Swedish band that were created in 2012. They started off by uploading videos to youtube of a few of their songs.  In all of the videos, a strong controversial message is shown as well as the actresses and actors appearances are hidden by wearing  Day of the dead masks. One of the videos received over 20K views in which boosted their careers meaning they were signed by  records. Up until 2014, the identity of who they were and even how many members of the band there were was unknown.   On the exclusive performance at Shepherd Bush Empire where they opened for Circa Waves, who are signed by the same record label, they revealed their identity to the audience. The band is made up of Elvar Kronn, Oscar Johnson, Celestine Dubois, Patrick Healy and Jack Watson. The age range is 21 -23. The majority of the band met at the London school of economics where they formed the band and now use their music to express political and cultural issues.
