This is the homepage of Rogue Wave's website. I am interested in researching this bad due to these original and quirky style and I feel it is a grate example of the indie genre.
Strait away we see that the bold yellow title is the centre point of this front page. It is promoting of of their songs and its music video behind it.
The band logo is below it also in yellow to keep to the theme of the website and also because this colour contrasts blue so is bolder on the page.
The navigation bar is below this in a simple white font with links to tour date, links to itunes etc and next to this are the links to all their social media pages.

Planning Protest Shoot
My Group and I plan to attend a protest to capture shots of people fighting back against the government. We thought that this protest would be a good one to film because it is an important global issue and will give our band a controversial image. Also the fact that it is taking place on the 28th of November means it is very close. We aim to get different shots of the protest to use in the beginning of our music video, setting the scene and our character.
We will use a variety of equipment to help us in different situations like using a GoPro when going inside the crowd to make it easier to shoot in confined spaces. We will also take two nikon camera so that we can get multiple angles of the protest at once. We are considering using tripods but may get in the way when in confined areas. And finally we will need a mask for our main character to wear when win the protest.

The location of this protest is outside Downing Street and will take place at 12am.

Casting Crew
- Ben King*
- Lewis Healy*
- Tom Harrison
- Ryan kelly
- Charlotte Howe
- Sam Livingston
- Megan Hughes*
- Charlie Harris*
- Tom Bradshaw
- James Gatehouse*
Here my group and I have been listing all the possible people that we could be different members in the band, including our main character. Myself and Charlie then went and took headshot of the possible members that can be seen above. We then discussed each member and then put an Asterix next to the people that are most likely going to be in the production
For our opening sequence we are going to be using a sequence from the Million Mask March which happened on the 5th of November. As we didn't film on this day because all members of the group and had a prior school commitment. Although, we have contacted a fellow student's brother who was able to attend the protest. He gave us permission to use his footage. We will use the footage to intercut it through out the music video.

Applying Media Theorists to Media Text
RollingStone Magazin

- The February 9th 2006 issue RollingStone magazine features Kanye West in a medium close up shot representing him as Jesus, complete with his crown of thorns and bloodied forehead.
- This edition of the magazine is aimed at two different audiences: the main audience is educated adult males interested in politics and current affairs; the secondary audience is young, predominantly male fans of Kanye West's music, who could buy this issue of the magazine as a one off. The traditional readers will be attracted to the font of the mast head(displayed in a rock genre font) and the gold has connotations of a quality magazine. The articles also appeal to these readers as they are about "Inside the War Room of the Religious Right", this appeals the main audiences; these are police and cultural stories.
- The preferred or dominant reading of the front cover (according to Stuart Hall's audience theories) is that Kanye a God in music terms. This appeals to young fans who enjoy and idolise him and his music.
- In contrast the oppositional reading is that Kanye is very offensive to the Christian faith. This audience would think the cover was very blasphemous and would say that portraying Jesus as black is offensive. This reading portrays Kanye as self obsessed and arrogant.

Artist Profile
Myself, Tom and Charlie have dicussed and decided the band name so today we planned the band profile and each artist. Following the idea of the band being anti-political, we wanted to carry on the idea of them being anonymous and unknown. This meant our profiles had to give away as little as possible of who they are.
Name - Unknown
DOB - Unknown
Birthplace - Unknown
Education - Unnown
However, we felt that as the band mangers we would have to know members of the band so created each members real profile. We each planned one member of the band.
The Drummer -
Name - pseudonym - Elvar Kroon
Born - 1992
Birthplace - Sundsvall Sweden
Education - London school of economics.
The singer-
Name - Oscar Johnson
Born - 1993
Birthplace - Hereford ( England )
Education - London school of economics
The Guitarist
Name - Celestine Dubois
Born - 1994
Birthplace Rouen - France
Together, we then planned the last 2 members of the band.
Second Guitarist
Name - Patrick Healy
Born- 1994
Birhtplace - Cork (Ireland)
Education - London school of economics
The Bassist
Name - Jack Watson
Born - 1992
Birthplace - Hereford ( England )
Education - none
Element 5 are a Swedish band that were created in 2012. They started off by uploading videos to youtube of a few of their songs. In all of the videos, a strong controversial message is shown as well as the actresses and actors appearances are hidden by wearing Day of the dead masks. One of the videos received over 20K views in which boosted their careers meaning they were signed by records. Up until 2014, the identity of who they were and even how many members of the band there were was unknown. On the exclusive performance at Shepherd Bush Empire where they opened for Circa Waves, who are signed by the same record label, they revealed their identity to the audience. The band is made up of Elvar Kronn, Oscar Johnson, Celestine Dubois, Patrick Healy and Jack Watson. The age range is 21 -23. The majority of the band met at the London school of economics where they formed the band and now use their music to express political and cultural issues.

Prop research

Here my group and I have researched ideas for masks that we want our character to wear. we also want to get some simpler masks for the other members of the band which we want to occasionally flash up on the screen.
This is the mask that we want our character to wear. The reason behind this is due to the fact it is both cheep and is at a high enough quality for our music video. We wanted an arty, weird feel to our music video due to our song being very ambient. This day of the mask also gives off a quite serial eerie feel, which we want the atmosphere of our film to be.
High Concept idea
Focussing on a a protester who attends a protest. He then seems to get followed on his journey home causing him to start to panic. This ends with him being un-masked and arrested but the audience are unsure the reason why.

Music Video Analysis - Lake Michigan - Rogue Waves
I decided to analyse the music video Lake Michigan by Rogue Wave because I felt their music fit the indie genre of music which is the genre of music that my group and I wish to use for our music video.

This performance video promotes that band as an indie band due to the look they give the video. In this case the have given it and soft sepia tone to give the video and old fashioned and authentic look. This is a close up shot introducing a band member, giving him quit a mysterious look.

This band is perceived to look adventurous and different - they go on car journeys to the country side to play music in the wild.

We the see that it is a performance video after seeing close ups of there instruments which again reinforce their indie look because of the Mise-en-Scene. I also like the over exposed look that they achieve and fell it suits the indie genre.

The fact that the band are seen exploring nature is another indication to the fact the band are indie because wildlife is quite a common theme in this genres of music videos.
Thursday, 15 October 2015
On Thursday the 5th of November a protest - The Million Mask March - took place. Due to lake of preparation my group and I were unable to capture this perfect protest for our film. We are looking to find some stock footage that captures the violence and wildness of the protest and then find a different protest to film scenes with our characters, then combine these to make it look as if the main character is amerced in the violence and passion of the protest.Preperation
On the 14th of October a production designer (Paul Cripps) came into my school for a talk on production design and to help make our non budget music videos more achievable. For example, we wanted to capture a fire in our video but this could be problematic because it is dangerous and hard to do. He gave use the idea of using smoke machines and a portable barbeque tray to light a small fire on. We also wanted to shoot in a public protest in our music video. We didn't want to stand out with our cameras so he gave use the idea of using hand held cameras in a cramped place then get a couple of friends crowd round our characters in a different place to make it easier to film. this would still look like our characters are in the protest without actually being there.

Planning Music Video
Here my group and I have been looking a appropriate name for our band that fits the genre and messages behind our band. We stated by looking at other band that are in the same genre as ours. We found that band members names were never used in the name of the bands, and are usually quite interesting/ the words are not usually used together, for example, 'Foster the People', Radio Head, etc.
We wanted our members/band to remain anemones to their audience. This meant our profiles had to give little evident as to who they are. We came up with the name Fifth Element because of the fact we wanted to stay with and unknown theme. We started with the name Element Five, not realising there was a famous film with this same name. Eliminate Five meant we could keep our concept but, without copying other names.

Analysing Music Videos
Analysing the changes in Music Videos

Woodkid - Iron
Costumes- 10
- The costumes were a crucial to elaborate on the ambient, eeriness of the bands music.
Sets- 6
- There were six sets that were similar looking but different in tones and lighting. The sets are simple to move your attention onto the costumes and graphical Images.

Special Effects- 6
- There are few special effects in this music video but they are used to capture a dramatic more visual video. There are also smaller more simple effect with fire and dust.
Makeup- 4
- The makeup is used to give more of a background to the subjects in the video. This shot, though the makeup, tells us the boy is an important figure in this video due to his well groomed hair with a very clean, light face.Lighting- 12
-Low key lighting has a huge effect on the atmosphere of the video.
Props- 13
- Lots of props were used to achieve a war torn atmosphere, with weapons, animals etc.
Sets- 2
This music video concentrates more on the choreography and fashion rater then the changing of sets. In this case there is two sets. One in the studio and another of the same studio but on a small TV.
Lighting- 4
Makeup- 2
-Only a few faces are seen in this video. These faces are dramatically changed with makeup to make the subjects almost seem inhuman.
Costumes- 9
- The costumes play a vital part in this video seeing as there is one set, and not much else. The costumes reinforce the bands music, which is weird, crazy and very futuristic.
Costumes- 4
The costumes are used to set a triple like theme in the narrative part of the music video. The costume is very modern/smart on the set.
Sets- 1
There was one studio set used to show the contrast between the performance side of the video and the narrative.

Props- 3
The props are quite subtle in this music video. For example, rocks and logs are used as weapons.

David Fincher is a film graduate and a great example of a direct that has used this. He was noticed by his music videos. These videos consistently use intertextual references for example in this music video, The Rolling Stones - Love Is Strong, it seem he has given a reference to 1954 Godzilla. This is because he has played with proportion/size and is shot in black and white. This is saying that the audience of The Rolling Stones are film lovers and are also male oriented due to the fact Godzilla is a male targeted film.
Another example of Fincher using this technique is in the music video, Oh Father by Madonna, a Hitchcock inspired shot is used by casting a shadow onto the face of the subject. This is used

Tori Kelly - Should've Been Us - Edits

Whip Pan Edit- This used to condense time - as whip the artist repairs in another location, this may work in our music video but, our genre is very different.

Jump Dissolve Edit- This type of edit gives the effect of jumping forward in time. Here it is used to keep the attention of the audience, instead of having one long take.

Focus Pull Edit- Usually this means adjusting the focus from one subject to another. In this case this music video uses a focus pull mid take to retain a more exciting video.

Lens Flare- This is when light reflects of the screen making interesting colours appear on the shot. In this video the lens flare is artificial to added to make the appearance of the shot more pop like.

Goodwin's Music Video Analysis
He wrote a book, "Dancing in the Distraction Factory", 1992.
His Theories
- Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g Stage performance in metal band, dance routine for boy/girl band).

Green Day - 21 Guns Music video
- There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

Keane - Somewhere Only We Know
The lyrics are, "I came across a fallen tree", while a car come across an array of trees (some fallen over)
- There is a relationship between music and visual ( either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

Supergrass - Alright
The music is very up beat while people are enjoying the sunny weather.
- The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work. (a visual style).
Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of My Head
- There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescope, etc) and particular voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

Green Day - American Idiot
-There is often intertextual reference (to film, TV programmes, other music videos etc).

Lily Allen - Alfie
